Tangerine tango lauded as color of the year

Tangerine Tango is the color of the year for fashion, according to Pantone, the company that provides color standards for designers worldwide.
International Orange is the color for iconic bridges, according to all of us celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Blend in Giants fans and reach for your shades. This season, San Francisco is juiced about all tones orange, including Tangerine Tango.
Indeed, it may be our best shade, all year, every year. Consider this: Orange is the color of the second chakra, which represents joy, creativity, sexuality, harmony, passion, freedom, emotional balance, self-esteem, confidence and an overall sense of wellness.
Sound familiar?
This season, that feel-goodness inspired a range of womenswear lines from Bottega Veneta to Adrienne Vittadini. Tory Burch and Kate Spade, two brands known for embracing color, are bear-hugging oranges and corals this season.
"Tangerine Tango is a bit exotic but in a very friendly, nonthreatening way," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. She calls it "a fun, lively take on a traditional autumnal hue," and expects the color to remain big through the fall fashion season.
Eiseman describes the color of the year as "vivacious and enticing" and suggests that the color "provides the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward."
Why restrict Tangerine Tango, or orange, or coral to women's fashion?
Ligna Roset's classic Togo sofa, Nina Jobs FIA carafe for Design House Stockholm, Pio Manzu's Cronotime clock for Alessi all glow in the shades of tropical sunset. Eiseman suggests painting a wall in Tangerine Tango for a burst of energy in the kitchen, an entryway or a hallway. Even menswear is popping with bursts of orange, from polo shirts to socks.
Public Bikes is offering an orange M8, an eight-speed unisex step-through bike. Rickshaw Bags stitched up iPad sleeves and its Mini Zero messenger bag in Pantone's official Tangerine Tango.
That color ... there's enough of it at Wilkes Bashford to make Florida's groves blanch. Loro Piano, Tod's and even Oscar de la Renta are embracing orange.
"It's a way to have fun with collections without adding over-the-top costs," says Andrew Mitchell-Namdar, the vice president of marketing and creative services at Wilkes Bashford. The store is also showcasing the handiwork of Mill Valley's Kathleen Dughi: a 3.34-carat natural orange sapphire ring with diamonds. It's over the tippy top, a one-of-a-kind piece fabricated from platinum.
"Fashion-y people have always understood orange," says Mitchell-Namdar. "It is such a vibrant color, it makes you feel good, and it is very flattering."
At Bloomingdale's, the oranges began ripening as a trend last spring. Now, wow!
"It started last year. Your eye adjusts, and today it feels really right. People are loving the color," says Brooke Jaffe, fashion director for handbags, shoes, jewelry, seasonal accessories, intimate apparel and hosiery. "Even in the belt department, a skinny neon belt sold out. ... Adding that little wink of color, that may be enough for one customer."
Others are color blocking, putting orange or coral with white, hot pink or cobalt blue and, of course, with black or chocolate brown in an aspirational homage to the Hermès box, in which nice things often arrive.
Jaffe's seeing pumps and dress shoes in the Tangerine Tango range selling at a sprinter's pace. "It's the same with handbags," she says. Orange handbags come in and poof! they're gone.
Even makeup is doing the Tangerine Tango. Pantone and Sephora joined their color and beauty expertise to create a color of the year collection. Sara Biria, one of Sephora's 14-member team that trains other company makeup artists, sees Tangerine Tango living well beyond its year. "It complements all skin tones," she says. In summer, she suggests using it in the form of lip gloss, then switching to a lipstick for winter. The color "is never going to be boring," she says.
Nor will you if you experiment with Tangerine Tango eyeliner, eye shadow and blush sold alone and together in a set.
